The Willow Ridge Press studio has been as bustling as Santa’s workshop, with quilt designs and color palettes flying out the door to be under the tree of major fabric manufacturers. I do wish I could share them with you all, but like the best gifts, they are a secret until they’re unwrapped! I promise you’ll see them in 2009.
I’ve got some decidedly contrite catching up to do, so today I’m giving away two gifts to two lucky readers. Major chances of winning, here ladies. And the gifts?
- Strawberry Jellies quilt pattern, from Me & My Sister Designs
- Two Oh So Charming patterns from Larisa Key: Nine-Patch Charm Walk and Charm Play
I so adored your Christmas memories – thank you for sharing. Wonderful memories of a father’s laugh, a beloved Timex watch, hearing reindeer bells and Santa, and choosing the perfect Christmas tree. The magic of Christmas is, indeed, alive here at Quilts & Creativity. If you’re not reading the comments, you’re really missing out. Take the time and your heart will be warmed.

Today, let’s share your favorite Christmas cards you give or receive. I make a handmade card every year to send out. My favorite is one that was so simple: a construction paper house, literally torn and collaged, with photos of our family as the windows. Now that our kids are older, we include artwork from all of us, along with favorite family photos. I love receiving handmade cards. In this day of photo cards with printed signatures from everyone in the family, they are few in number, but adored by me, all the same. What are yours?

For my sons first birthday I found a design that was a tree out of a handprint. I made that for my mother in law with my sons hand. He is her only grand child. The next year I made another design with his handprint and so on. She has a wall she keeps the cards up all year and in order and you can see how much my son has grown. Now on Christmas she does not care for her present as much as seeing what we did with his handprint that year.
My favorite Christmas greeting this year was a poem that was included in a card from a dear friend. My father died in October and so she included a poem entitled “My first Christmas in Heaven”. It’s too long to post but you should google it. It’s easy to find. I’ve now included it in cards to my family and other friends who have lost someone close.
Because my kids are teens and are still changing very quickly I do like to send a picture of them. However, this year we did a big family vacation and I did a collage card with pictures of various family members and activities that we did. I really like the idea of a collage card.
Many of my friends’ families are growing, so I do love to see the photos. I especially appreciate when they write a little note on the back too!
I enjoy digital scrapbooking so I have been using it to make our cards to send out. I *still* haven’t sent this year’s cards out, but I’m planning on printing the scrapped images and then affixing them to the front of blank cards so it’s easier to write a message inside.
I’m new to quilting and would love to try one of these patterns. Your site is great and insightful – the tips are really helpful.

My very favorite cards come from my family, my grown children!…
My daughter is an artist, a painter, and her “card” to me is personal, hand painted, and truly a work of art!! I love these! (My birthday card from her was a small version on paper, of a huge canvas painting that I admired that was in her solo exhibition in Manhattan this fall!)
My oldest son and dear daughter-in-law’s “card” is a calendar that they create! They use pictures of their two sons throughout the year, with notes for special times… Seeing my grandsons’ pictures on each month’s calendar, with the special notes, makes this a “card” that I enjoy every day, all year long!!
I agree, Maria, that the handmade cards are the best, the most personal!
If I don’t have time to make a quilted postcard or pieced “card” for everyone on my list, I will hand paint or print a design on blank card stock. Simple is often the most beautiful, personal, and heartfelt!
Blessings!!!
I, too love the photo cards. I think my favorite card that I have given was when my oldest was born we scanned his newborn footprint onto the computer and then printed the image on cream cards. The grandparents were especially happy to have a print of his sweet little footprint.
